« 2019 has proved a fitting year for the launch of Leaders League’s new Finance & Tax guide. Corporate finance and investment, especially in the US, remain strong in the face of political instability worldwide, and many top banks, law firms and consultancies have accordingly been posting their best results since the financial crash a decade ago. Hearteningly, ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) criteria are increasingly important considerations for fund managers and investors, and investment has begun to be reshaped accordingly. The fact that there is well over $1trn of dry powder globally has led to more competitive deal-making – though rising equity valuations have forced fund managers to both upscale and start specializing. Yet if there’s one thing 2019 has taught us, it’s that equity valuations are not always what they are cracked up to be.There have been numerous high-profile IPOs, some of which have been wildly successful (Beyond Meat) and some of which have left much to be desired (Uber, Lyft). The most headline-grabbing IPO, however, is one that will probably not take place in 2019 at all: the flotation of office space behemoth WeWork. After publishing its prospectus in August, it was forced to curtail its promises and ambitions in a matter of weeks. By early September, it had slashed its own valuation from $47 billion to $20 billion. At the time of writing, it will probably fall further: $20 billion is still well over 10 times the company’s revenue… »
